Long before European contact, the ancient Chamorro people of the Mariana Islands were master craftsmen and builders of agile and swift canoe vessels.

European explorers were amazed by the craftsmanship, nimbleness and speed of these vessels and dubbed them "flying proas." After first contact with these canoes, Ferdinand Magellan referred to the islands as "Islas De Las VELAS Latinas" or "the Islands of Lateen Sails."
